The 9 Best Dining Room Tables of 2024

dining table design

If you have a statement-making vase you’re looking for an excuse to showcase, put it out. You can put a plant in it, cluster other décor around it, or leave it on its own. If you’re looking for a less obvious way to decorate your dining room table, consider turning your table runner sideways. Just be sure your table runner is short enough not to hit the floor when you do this, or you might want to consider buying a new option. Create contrast by combining a taller item with a shorter one, or create balance by pairing items of similar heights. If you focus on highlighting items you love, you’re bound to end up with a very delightful centerpiece.

Gorgeous DIY Dining Table Ideas and Plans

Long, rectangular tables are the most popular kind of dining table designs. They're perfect for narrow rooms because they fit well and can seat a bunch of people. The long shape gives you lots of space to spread out, making them ideal for big families or people who have guests over a lot. Like farmhouse dining tables, modern style tables often feature clean lines and a smooth symmetry. If you enjoy a modern style in your home, the Ivy Bronx Kausar Dining Table may be right up your alley. At an ample 63 inches in length, this rectangular table will fit up to six people, which is more than enough for a cozy dinner.

It is important to allow a bit more room per person at a round table, because the place setting tapers like a pie wedge towards the center of the table. We all prefer to be able to get in and out of our seats without feeling cramped. We eat at them daily, decorate them for holiday dinners, even work on them from time to time. A great dining table provides ages of dependability and utility, and needs only minimal upkeep.

Decorate Your Dining Room Bench, Instead

They are durable, elegant, modern, and understated, allowing other elements of your decor to take center stage. Your dining table can be a thing of beauty all by itself if you choose a stylish design. A contrasting white base finishes off the elegant look and it’s neutrality ensures it can work with any color scheme. We don’t all want huge table tables to seat many, a table for two works perfectly especially if you live in a small home or apartment. It’s important to create a cohesive look in your dining room, so consider matching your table to your benches – if they’re your chosen seating. Please note that the designs showcased within the story are subject to availability and will vary based on the year the homes were designed.

Each trestle consists of a horizontal beam, atop which sits the tabletop. Anything that falls outside the realm of the ‘big four’ shapes (oval, square, round, rectangular) is called ‘freeform’. Tiled tables look great in outdoor dining areas and are resistant to damage from weather and moisture. Glass tabletops might not be ideal for homes with young children, as they quickly accumulate fingerprints. Some glass tabletops can have sharp edges which may not be the best for young children. It’s hard wearing and antibacterial, that’s why it’s used for countertops too.

If you want to make a bold statement, don’t just grab this table- equally bold chairs or benches will complete the look. However, the Toscana’s charm comes from its distressed Italian farmhouse look combined with X-shaped supports. There are many things to take into consideration before purchasing a table or even narrowing it down to a few designs that you feel particularly attached to. Before anything else, measure the room you want to place the table in. Make sure you take into consideration the doors and all the furniture present in the room.

The leaves are added to either end of the table rather than in the middle. The trestle is supported on each end by a pair of legs that slope in either direction, away from the central beam. A round table is excellent for conversations and are often used when extra space is needed. The shape of your dinner setting will be influenced by the size of your room and how many people you want to accommodate.

Rectangular Tables With Clean Lines

Here, in a dining room designed by Workstead, bowls and vases bring character. "The Bauers wanted a home that felt elegant but super practical and fun," designer Augusta Hoffman explains of this project. In this case, the boat motif draws the eyes up and keeps the center of the dining table clear for a large catch-all and matching glassware. Vases make excellent centerpieces—and bold vases make particularly great ones.

A round table is ideal when space is at a premium, it allows you to move around it without bumping into corners, always a bonus. This table has an enamel top which gives it a charming appeal and of course, makes it practical and easy to maintain.

The best dining tables come in a vast variety of different shapes, sizes, and decor styles. They’re commonly crafted from materials as varied as wood, glass, metal, and marble, or a combination of these. We’ve looked high and low for some of the loveliest dining room tables available that are not only functional for meals and parties, but for any other usage that strikes your fancy.

When a tree is cut using the ‘en boule’ method, it is split from top to bottom into several thick slices. When the leaves are up and secured in place, a drop-leaf table can be used for dinner service. When the leaves are down, the small surface remains, so it can easily be moved out of the middle of the room to be used as a side table. They are great for small spaces because there are no legs to navigate around, making it easier to get up and sit down at the tabletop with less clearance.

While Shaker tables are usually made out of maple, almost all mission style tables are made out of oak. Their dedication to these beliefs and their desire to be self-sufficient has given the world one of the most iconic styles of dining room furniture — the Shaker table. Consider a refectory table if you have a large family or host big dinner parties. A ‘refectory’ is actually a type of room in a religious dwelling such as a monastery or convent. The en boule technique preserves the bark (also called the ‘live edge’). These kinds of tables are supported by a specific kind of bracing structure called a trestle, usually one trestle at each end of the furniture.

Natural Wood Dining Tables

I’ve made thousands of tables in my 30 years as a furniture maker. When I am creating a table, there are a few main things I think about. So, if your shelves are stocked with small, pretty pieces, consider putting them on display. Thanks to their small size, these pieces won’t demand much table real estate, and they can be a great way to add some flair to your space without making it feel cluttered. There are so many colors, shapes, sizes, and textures to consider—and that’s a lot to keep track of. So, if you’re looking for an easier way to curate a clustered centerpiece, consider constraining your palette to just one color.

Add character with good old-fashioned style

Once you’ve chosen that and you know the style you want to go for, then start to create your look. The key ingredients will be lighting, seating, artwork and accessories. When you have several shapes going on in one space you need to give your table design thought. A table crafted from reclaimed timber will always lend itself well to a country setting, rustic and worn, it will add character where a modern design simply won’t. The colours used here are Annie Sloan’s Scandinavian Pink a beautiful dusky shade used on Scandi furniture, and Old White – a chalky off-white that works with any color.

And if they don’t, look for options that will complement your dining room décor. Don’t force yourself to choose between vases, bowls, and candlesticks if you don’t want to—simply stock up on all three. You can cluster them in the center of your table, or spread them out across it. Either way, you’re in for a dining room table that looks dynamic, textured, and uniquely your own.

Pallet Dining Room Table Plan

Here’s a classic table that will feel at home in almost any dining space. With a streamlined top, beveled edges, and tapered legs, this solid wood dining table displays peak midcentury design. It has the kind of sophistication and simplicity you look for in a timeless piece of furniture, and it’s available in three sizes—all of which are expandable. If you want a similar midcentury table but need something more compact, consider the Zinus Jen wood dining table. It features clean lines and has a sleek, less-is-more silhouette with round tapered legs and rounded-corner tabletop. This one doesn’t expand, but it has a comfortable seating capacity of up to four, so it’s perfect for a casual family table or breakfast nook.

Since metal tables are heavy they can be difficult to move, although one can find lighter metal tables available. They are also heat absorbing which can make them hot to the touch if used outdoors. But to enhance that you can pick benches and chairs to complement the table’s design, place it on a striking rug, hang a statement pendant light above it or simply display a selection of candles on a tray.

And if it’s lighter or brighter, they’ll add a welcome dose of contrast to your dining room. And since you’re curating the set yourself, you can make it as vibrant or as sleek as you want it to be. Many plant-based centerpieces are either fake or in constant need of replacement—we’re looking at you, fresh flowers. But, there’s no rule that says you can’t use a lush live plant as your centerpiece instead.

dining table design

Sure, there may be a fun bar cart moment or dinnerware display cabinet, but we can probably all agree that the table is the main character. Even if it isn't the only surface area you have for decorative objects, the dining table is likely the primary gathering zone and also the first thing people notice when they walk into the room. Just like styling your coffee table, your dining room table deserves extra attention. Ahead, find over a dozen ideas and tips, and then recreate your favorites. Call it retro, glam, or mod—this small dining table has lots of personality, but its aesthetic is versatile enough to fit in with a variety of decor schemes—and look luxe doing it.

This will keep your table feeling neat and tidy while allowing you to add a touch of dynamic décor to your space. Pair a light wooden table in a sleek white room with black candlesticks and black candles to match. The bold centerpiece will attract the eye without disrupting your minimalist palette, adding contrast and cohesion to your space in equal measure. A good mid-range wood for dining tables is maple, one of the hardest woods available and will stand up well to abuse. In addition you’ll need about 22 to 24 inches of banquet furniture space for chairs to comfortably sit without feeling too crowded. Larger types of dining chairs with arm rests or large seats will need even more space.

Plan to serve from the sideboard or the kitchen — there won’t be much room on the banquet furniture for anything but place settings. Best for small apartments or small rooms, a square tabletop will seat four without taking up too much space. In larger dining rooms, add a hutch or sideboard (matched or contrasting) to balance out the room. The downside to plastic is it can be prone to staining if spills are not wiped up quickly. In addition, a plastic tabletop may not fit all design styles and can look cheap and casual.

Be sure to look into the type of material that a table is made out of to determine if it will meet your needs. Hard, sturdy materials such as wood, marble, metal and glass are used for dining room tables, and these surfaces are often very long-lasting with proper care and maintenance. Though it does not have an extension feature, its 96 inches in length can accommodate 6 people and possibly more, which is great for a spirited game night to a special dinner. Plus, as part of Lark Manor’s Aldrina line, you can choose from a variety of chairs and benches to create your ideal dining space.

Our metalwork is performed in-house in order to craft each piece to your custom specifications. Keep in mind that all material does run a risk of damage with accidents or simple wear and tear. Marble tables are particularly porous and therefore quite susceptible to stains, discoloration, and potential liquid damage. Wooden tables come in hardwood, solid wood, and engineered wood, and may also have veneers to cover the surface. These types of tables should not be exposed to moisture, as warping may occur. For a particularly small space, a drop-leaf table has the leaves attached to the table on hinges, which can be folded down flatly when not in use.

Keep an eye on some of the accent shades in your space, and choose a centerpiece that matches them. Fresh fruit is an incredibly pretty thing, so why not take advantage of your just-bought produce and turn it into a centerpiece? Fresh oranges can add a pop of color and personality to an otherwise-minimalist space, and other kinds of fruit can make just as much of an impact. If you do a lot of reading at your dining room table—or honestly, even if you don’t—it can be worth it to keep a few of your favorite books nearby. Opt for a small stack of your go-to reads, or keep a couple coffee table books on hand. When you place items close together, they look related, and this rule of thumb will make crafting creative centerpieces a whole lot easier.

When you open a marked-up DWF or DWFx file in the product, you can view the markups in the drawing area, turn them off, make your changes, change the status of the markups, and republish the DWF or DWFx file to send out for another review. Currently, the Microsoft XPS Viewer does not support sheets containing 3D content, password-protected content, object properties, restricted content, or georeferenced map coordinates. In the Microsoft XPS Viewer, when attempting to view sheets DWFx files containing any of these unsupported features, a warning directs you to download and view the DWFx file in Design Review. Management’s proactive approach to resolving the filing delay, along with the perceived adequate time frame to achieve compliance, underpins Becker’s Buy rating, suggesting a favorable risk/reward scenario for investors in Autodesk’s shares. For most Autodesk products, a copy can be installed on a second computer for “non-concurrent usage”, meaning the two copies cannot run at the same time. I bought a subscription for PM & D Collection for $3000 and never got it to work. Hed to uninstall and reinstall several times and still got stuck in trial mode. No support, put in support ticket got no answer except that it'll take two days for an answer, but actually never got an answer.

If you're a 3D modeller or animator then Maya's new Smart Extrude tool, Motion Trail Editor, and a redesigned Dope Sheet will catch the eye. Apparently happen to reopen a case that they failed to fix but then they wont, just a load of automated responses, gotta start the process all over again.

Design Review enables your entire project or product team to view, print, measure, and markup DWF, DWG, DXF, PDF and raster files containing 2D and 3D content. Most DWF files begin as a drawing or model created in such Autodesk programs as AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit. Before a DWF file is published, the person publishing the DWF file determines which features (model, layouts, layers, blocks, named views, and so on) are included in the published DWF file. Once the content has been determined, the designer publishes the file from its original format to a DWF file and sends the DWF file to the review team to begin the digital design review process.

The markups and their statuses are saved in the DWF file. Autodesk® Design Review is a free program used for creating and reviewing DWF files. An open, published, and secure file format developed by Autodesk, DWF enables you to combine and publish rich 2D- and 3D-design data and share it with others. Disgusting filthy company.I have had on of their products for 13 years, hard copy bought and paid for. On display at the museum is the Academy Award that Shelley Winters won, and later donated to the museum, for her performance as Petronella van Daan in the 1959 film The Diary of Anne Frank. The award now sits in a bullet-proof glass case in the museum. 'Writing lets me get rid of it all, my sorrow disappears, my courage is revived! Anne Frank’s original red-checked diary is on display at the museum. Anne had to share a room with Fritz Pfeffer, which led to frequent arguments.

ANNE FRANK LA PRESENTS: ANNE FRANK DAY

anne frank house museum

Every Tuesday at 10am CET all tickets become available for a visit six weeks later. You can opt for a museum visit or a museum visit with an introductory program. Subsequently, the building became a warehouse, and the front warehouse with its wide stable-like doors was used to house horses. At the start of the 20th century, a manufacturer of household appliances occupied the building, succeeded in 1930 by a producer of piano rolls, who vacated the property by 1939.

CHESTNUT TREE

Mr. Kugler, you see, thought it would be better to place a cupboard in front of our door, (there are a lot of searches being carried out for hidden bicycles,) but then of course a cupboard on hinges that can open like a door. Mr. Voskuijl built the piece of furniture.’ Anne Frank wrote in her diary on 21 August 1942. In the museum you will receive information about Anne Frank, the other people in hiding in the Secret Annex, the helpers, as well as background information on the Second World War and the persecution of the Jews. Anne could see a chestnut tree through the only window that wasn’t blacked out in the attic. As long as this exists, I thought, and I may live to see it, this sunshine, the cloudless skies, while this lasts I cannot be unhappy.” A double flight of stairs leads visitors past an etched image of Anne’s beloved chestnut tree.

ANNE’S STORY

Together with his staff, Otto tried to rebuild Opekta and Pectacon, his companies. The former hiding place, the Secret Annex, was left empty. Anne Frank’s family tree is depicted on a floor-to-ceiling wall map, tracing Anne’s roots throughout Europe. Frankfurt am Main was home to the Frank family since the 1600s, and it was where Annelies "Anne" Marie Frank was born on June 12, 1929. The map follows their journey from Frankfurt to Amsterdam and their ultimate fates at Westerbork, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen.

Why an exhibit on Anne Frank?

Inside, visitors are seated in a 260-degree, circular theatre that approximates the size of the actual Secret Annex. A nine-minute film, projected in the round, immerses viewers in Anne’s two-year seclusion. The experience is enhanced by Steinfeld’s voice, diary excerpts, silhouettes of Anne and her fellow occupants, and audio-visual effects that convey everything from life in the annex to the harrowing sounds of nearby gunfire. Just beyond the map is a media station that plays an interview with Anne’s only living relative, her cousin Buddy Elias, who talks about his childhood memories of Anne. On the wall opposite the station, silent black-and-white footage plays on a loop, showing everyday life in pre-war Amsterdam. Anne can be briefly glimpsed leaning from a second-floor window, in a 1941 film made for her newlywed next-door neighbor.

The Schindler House - MAK Center for Art and Architecture

The building was opened as a museum to the public in 1960. After the war, the previous hiding place at Prinsengracht 263 and the neighbouring properties had fallen into disrepair. In 1950, the Berghaus textile factory wanted to buy the houses on the corner of the Prinsengracht and the Westermarkt. Berghaus planned to demolish the buildings and construct a new factory building.Otto Frank struggled when the demolition was announced. He was renting the building from Wessels, the owner, and they had agreed upon his right of first refusal. However, they lacked the funds for proper restoration work.In 1954, Otto Frank reluctantly sold the building to Berghaus.

Are you planning to visit the Anne Frank House, and do you want to prepare for your visit? Here, you will find practical information about our facilities, special facilities for visitors with disabilities, and our Terms and Conditions for Visitors. In June 1945, Otto Frank was the only one of the people from the Secret Annex to return from Auschwitz.

The experience begins with an image of Anne Frank and a graphic of her signature. The visitor enters a hallway that evokes a street scene from Frankfurt, Germany in 1932. To create the impression, a row of gabled facades has been silkscreened onto a zigzag wall and reflected in mirrors lining the left side of the hallway. Among the activities at multi-touch tables, visitors can create a "pledge" to make a difference and share their pledges on various social platforms.

Anne’s original diary is displayed in the renovated 265 Prinsengracht, next door to the original hideaway. Otto devoted himself to editing and getting the diary published; it was first published in Dutch in 1947. The Anne Frank Foundation was founded, with Otto’s cooperation, in 1957, with the aim of preserving the canal house as a museum. The number of visitors was initially overwhelming, and the museum was renovated and expanded in 1999.

On August 4, 1944, the Secret Annex was raided and the group was arrested. They were detained at Westerbork transit camp and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Anne and her sister Margot, along with fellow annex occupant Auguste van Pels, were eventually transported to Bergen-Belsen.

The same applies to tickets for children (0-9 years old) and visitors with discount cards. The hiding place at Prinsengracht 263 was restored and it opened to the public on 3 May 1960. The Secret Annex was left empty at the request of Otto Frank.

We are an independent non-profit organisation that runs a museum in the house where Anne Frank went into hiding and we try to increase awareness of Anne’s life story all over the world. Contact us to find out how to schedule a visit that is right for you - we can advise you on tour length, other programs or events available to you that day, and how to plan a meaningful visit for you, your group or your family. A committee of prominent citizens of Amsterdam took the initiative to save the building where Anne had written her diary from demolition. The Anne Frank House organisation was established in 1957 and its main purpose was to preserve the hiding place and open it up to the public, and to promote the ideals of Anne Frank in the process.

It begins with Anne Frank’s birth in Germany in 1929, spotlights the rise to power of Hitler and his antisemitic National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP), and ends with the Frank family’s emigration to the Netherlands in 1933. The museum has a cloakroom where you can leave your coat, bag, umbrella, or buggy. Only bags that are smaller than an A4 sheet of paper can be carried inside. We do not have room to store large bags and backpacks, suitcases, or other large items. Please leave your luggage at your hotel or deposit it at Amsterdam Central Station, otherwise, you may not be able to visit the museum.

Though the total amount of floor space in the inhabited rooms came to only about 450 square feet (42 m2), Anne Frank wrote in her diary that it was relatively luxurious compared to other hiding places they had heard about. They remained hidden here for two years and one month until they were raided by the Nazi authorities, arrested, and deported to their deaths in concentration and death camps. Of the hidden group, only Otto Frank survived the camps. The entire museum, which occupies the three adjacent buildings on the street front of Prinsengracht 263 to 267,[1] opened on 3 May 1960. It preserves the hiding place (the Secret Annex at rear of 263), with the other buildings expanding the permanent exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank, and has an exhibition space about all forms of persecution and discrimination. In 2017, the museum had 1.27 million visitors and was the third most visited museum in the Netherlands, after the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

Viking®

us river cruise

Well USA River Cruises has those, too, with our sweet suite of European Cruises. One suggestion for fixing this would be to store the trash below deck or move it to an outdoor area at the back of the boat, where the wind would blow the smell back over the wake instead of into passenger areas. Every night, he greeted us, took our orders and brought each course, but there was virtually no following up in between courses to see how we were doing. I expect he was too busy juggling a large number of tables to have time to check in routinely with any of them. That same head waiter sat us every night at dinner and always made sure we had what we needed. However, by the final night of the sailing, he looked frazzled and exhausted.

Night Great Lakes & Georgian Bay Cruise

You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa). There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. From the Great Lakes region to the banks of the Mississippi and the Eastern Seaboard to the Pacific Coast, uncover cities brimming with culture and charm. Viking reveals America’s diverse landscapes and fascinating history on unforgettable river, ocean and expedition journeys.

Ships

First, it's important to acknowledge that paddlewheel vessels are less fuel efficient than boats that operate with more modern engines. Part of the charm of American Queen is the paddlewheel itself, so some allowances are made by default. AQV also prides itself on hiring from the local communities along the rivers it travels.

St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes

Day nine, finds the the ship at La Crosse, Wisconsin, famous for its rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas. The final port is Red Wing, Minnesota, home to beautifully preserved artisan workshops, factories, and pioneer-era architecture. After disembarking, passengers can explore nearby Minneapolis before going home. History buffs will love this nine-day cruise along the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers aboard American Queen Voyages' 245-passenger American Countess paddle wheeler. The itinerary offers guests a chance to explore the idyllic river towns that inspired the Father of American Literature. I've taken several river cruises in my time as a cruise writer, but until this summer, they were all on foreign rivers like the Rhine and the Mekong.

It's an impressive ode to history, complete with comfortable and richly furnished accommodations, great service, delicious food and visits to some of America's small towns. Although American Queen Voyages, like the rest of the domestic travel market, is still struggling with staffing issues, the experience was superior overall. Designed to carry about 400 passengers, American Queen is the largest paddlewheeler in the U.S. river cruise industry. The fact that there were only about 250 cruisers on board during my sailing was an added bonus.

The Mississippi River is the first river that most people think of when it comes to cruising in the United States. American Cruise Lines has five riverboats that run almost the entire year on the Mississippi and its tributaries, including the Tennessee River, the Ohio River, and the Cumberland River. Unlike cruising on the open ocean, the riverboat journey is a smooth one, with land never far out of sight and beautiful landscapes nearly close enough to touch. The best time to take a U.S. river cruise depends on your personal preferences and the destination. Cruising in the States follows a seasonal pattern, with spring resulting in a higher chance of rain and summer bringing hot and humid weather.

Contact us today to find your perfect river cruise and let us show you America like you've never seen it before. Choosing Cruise Genie's US River Cruising means you're selecting a partner who values your experience above all. Our commitment to quality, personalized service, and deep knowledge of US riverways sets us apart, ensuring your river cruise is not just a journey, but a lifelong memory. Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum.

You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Ours provided lots of fun facts about the efficiency and capacity of cargo riverboats, which far exceed those of semi-trucks and trains. While ocean vessels often focus on large cities or beachy destinations, the small towns found along American rivers are replete with charm and hospitality that are hard to come by elsewhere. The locals I met were exceptionally welcoming, and American Queen's daily tour schedule directed me to hidden-gem attractions I might have otherwise overlooked. A riverboat is able to dock in the heart of destinations inaccessible to large cruise ships, resulting in an up-close exploration of the small towns and unique cities that define America. Riverboats are inherently smaller with fewer guests on board, making for a more intimate and personalized travel experience. Though our ships are small, American Cruise Lines has the largest staterooms on any riverboat or small cruise ship in the world.

From the Great Lakes and the mighty Mississippi to the Columbia River and our Alaskan Cruises ports of call — all the way to our cruises throughout Europe and the Caribbean. Imagine exploring the ins and outs of the largest group of freshwater lakes on earth — and then hop aboard our Great Lakes River Cruises.

Contact us to learn more about our exclusive US river cruise offerings and let us help you discover the beauty of America's waterways. The other experience that made me cringe was when I boarded one of the line's free charter buses for a ride to town during one of our port stops. It's likely the ship has no way of knowing how many people will need the buses later in the day, but perhaps smaller vehicles could be considered as alternatives after the initial passenger rush dies down. These are, of course, small niggles that didn't greatly affect my enjoyment of the cruise overall. But, for such a luxurious ship, they were a bit unexpected and certainly not reflective of an experience that starts at about $3,000 per person for weeklong cruise. Not wanting to make a big deal about it (particularly because we arrived 15 minutes prior to the closing time), I didn't say anything.

Day five begins at the mouth of the Palouse River, where guests can kayak or paddleboard. The next day, passengers can visit Columbia Hills State Park and Rowena Plateau on foot or by skiff boat while enjoying river dips, farm-to-fork delights, and a wine tour and tasting. Guests then disembark at The Dalles, Oregon, for whitewater rafting or a relaxing winery tour. River Cruise Specialists can provide information about the different river cruise lines and ships that service various destinations worldwide. They can help you choose the best cruise line for your specific needs, taking into account your budget, travel style, and desired level of comfort.

Viking Sky cruise evacuation and rescue: A timeline of what happened

viking sky cruise ship

Reykjavik was just a small village until seeing a major expansion after World War II, but this popular cruise destination still offers a small town feel different than any other European capital. Whether looking out into the city’s waterways, ancient castles or modern buildings, you’ll always have a great view when cruising to Stockholm, Sweden. All cabin categories enjoy complimentary movies on demand and room-service (24-hour).

Veranda Stateroom (V)

Compared to similar class vessels operated by other companies, Viking OCEAN's itineraries feature fewer sea days and longer port days, with a lot of overnight port stays. A level up, Penthouse Veranda staterooms are larger, at 338 square feet, including the balcony. The indoor seating area comprises a sofa and chair, with enough space to sprawl.

Viking Sky Dining

This is perhaps the most interesting dining venue on the ship and could be described as a part-restaurant, part-shore excursion. Your experience begins with a trip ashore to source ingredients, before returning to the ship to prepare and cook your meal. Viking Sky is a 930-guest cruise ship that has been in service for Viking Cruises since 2017. Primarily based in Europe for Baltic and Mediterranea cruises, Viking Sky is recommended if you’re looking for a luxury cruise holiday on a mid-size ship.

Onboard Activities

Viking Sky maximizes the scenery, with most of its venues featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, many of which can be opened when weather is pleasant. Viking's Snow Grotto is a spa retreat with powdery snow falling down from the ceiling. The experience (touted beneficial to the body's blood circulation) includes heating in a sauna (steam bath), then walking into this small room fitted with benches and with dark stone walls illuminated by blue light.

Children must be 18 or older to sail, and the line offers no organized activities for kids. Atle H. Knutsen saw his first cruise ship at age six and knew he was destined to be a sea captain. During his 30-plus years on cruise ships, he worked his way up the ranks from deckhand to master and enjoyed a diverse maritime career. Serving as master on Viking Sky is especially meaningful as it carries the name of his hometown of Bergen and the flag of Norway.

Ships in the Viking Ocean Cruises fleet

"You could feel the ship climbing the waves and then just plummeting on the other side. Waves were rocking the sides of the ship too, and it was kind of pitching back and forth as well," Jamey Kennedy, 64, of Clinton, Tennessee, said. "We were in the restaurant when a really huge wave came and shattered a door and flooded the entire restaurant," she said. "All I saw were bones, arms, water and tables. It was like the Titanic – just like the pictures you have seen from the Titanic." Accounts from passengers, a crew member and officials have provided further details as to how it all unfolded.

Deck A

Viking Sky successfully walks the fine line between full-blown luxury cruise and value vacation. Cruises include more add-ons than most mainstream cruise lines offer, yet passengers will pay for several discretional items covered by other all-inclusive lines. During the day, that's jeans or casual pants, T-shirts, shorts or breezy dresses or skirts (for the women, of course).

Penthouse Junior Suite

Viking Sky is a cruise ship built by Fincantieri at its shipyard in Ancona, for Viking Ocean Cruises. It is the sister ship to Viking Star and Viking Sea, delivered in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Viking Sky also has a selection of venues where you can pick up light-bites and snacks throughout the day.

Women wear blouses and dress slacks or skirts, and men wear dress pants or khakis with button-down or collared shirts. Some men choose to wear jackets and even ties, but they aren't required. If you want to dress more casually, jeans and tees are fine for the ship's buffet dining venue, The World Cafe. On March 23, 2016, the ship (yard/hull number 6237) was launched/floated out from drydock at Ancona shipyard.

All beverages served at the onboard lounges and bars cost extra. Prices are around $6 (cocktail), $4 (beer), $5-6 (wine by the glass). All passenger cabins are with private balconies, and about 1/5th larger than average standard staterooms on the ocean cruising market. This venue could be transformed into an outdoor casual dining place thanks to its floor-ceiling sliding windows.

We liked the latter the best based on the smallness of th ship, which translates to the absence oc queuing in line for things. Crowded and delayed embarkation processes can put a damper on things, as can debarkation delays. Viking tends to the details of these and other processes like the experienced pros they are. Nothing is left to chance, and we marveled over the efficiency of both processes. Speaking at the Scandic Hotel Alexandra, where many of the evacuated passengers are staying, Terbruegen described seeing the ship drifting toward rocks before being evacuated.

The Explorers' Lounge features floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and a Nordic atmosphere designed with epic explorations in mind. "We don't know the reason why the ship sailed, knowing such bad weather was forecast," Kurt Olsen, acting director for Norway's Accident Investigations Board, told USA TODAY. "We have a very good weather service in this country, so I would guess the crew knew everything about the forecast. How they responded will definitely be part of the investigation."

Get a panoramic look at our award-winning, all-veranda ocean ships. Our new fleet of sister ships are purpose-built at a scale that allows direct access into small and large ports alike. "The last few days have been both dramatic and hectic for guests and crew on board Viking Sky," Hagen said in the statement. "I would like to apologize for all our guests have been through." Lockert was one of two pilots from the Norwegian Coastal Administration who boarded the ship on Saturday to help the crew take the ship into port, the Vesteraalen daily said. Carolyn Savikas of Pennsylvania described the terror aboard the Viking Sky to Norway's VG newspaper, saying she heard a "terrible crash," after which the ship rocked, and water raced in.

It's a minor point, as many passengers choose to head to bed early to prepare for the next day's port arrival, but it's noticeable. Also worth noting is the disparity in quality between the ship's included shore excursions and its optional, for-fee offerings, which are, in some cases, significantly better. Still, pricing for the optional excursions is reasonable, and many passengers elect to add a few such tours to their cruise. Viking OCEAN offers destination-rich itineraries featured with the brand's new "small ship cruise" tour and onboard experience.
